July Hiking Meetup At Annie’s Canyon + Sunset Swim
July Sunset Hiking Social- San Elijo Lagoon + Annie’s Canyon + Optional Swim
Summer is in full swing in San Diego which means the hiking trails are heating up fast. But that doesn’t mean we have to stop exploring. Join me on my go-to coastal trail in San Diego! We’ll be doing a three (ish) mile loop around the entire lagoon including the infamous Annie’s Canyon (a unique slot canyon by the beach). We’ll walk over to the beach after to watch the sunset and enjoy a cold beverage or two. I’ll supply some non alcoholic drinks for the group, but if you’d like anything else- BYOB 🙂
Option to hop in the water but fair warning we’ll be getting some bigger surf next week and are expected to have a high tide at 7:30pm of about 6 ft.
About Annie’s Canyon:
Annie’s Canyon is a 1/4 mile long slot canyon. It’s a very narrow passage with steep walls made out of sandstone (not for the claustrophobic). Years ago, the canyon was entirely covered in water. Over time the rock eroded and eventually turned into the canyons we see today. It’s one of San Diego’s most unique hikes and worth checking out at least once!
Because this hike is easily accessible and family friendly, expect to be sharing the trail with other hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Please plan on arriving 5-10 minutes early to find parking and lace up your shoes.

- Distance: 3 ish miles round trip (+ 1/4 mile if you choose to add on Annie’s Canyon)

- Elevation Gain: 200 ft (ish)
- Dog Friendly: Yes (but not in the canyon). Cardiff State Beach also allows dogs on leash.

- Parking: free street parking is available in the residential area right by the trailhead at the end of North Rios Ave

After our hike, it’s a short 15 minute walk to Cardiff State Beach from the trailhead.
Trail snacks/ beverages are highly encouraged! If you’d like to bring your dog, you will not be able to add on Annie’s Canyon. Dogs are not allowed in the slot canyon. Everything but the slot canyon is dog friendly.
